12 things to see and do at the Dig for Victory Show 2017

Can you believe that in just over a week the Dig for Victory Show will be back at the North Somerset Showground? We’ve had a record number of re-enactors and vehicle applications to the show this year as well as booking some absolutely fabulous entertainment!

From swing dance to skirmishes, live music to make do and mend, vintage cars to fairground rides, we’ve got something to entertain everyone.
Let’s have a look at some of the things that we’ve got lined up!

Keep an eye out for classic cars, bikes, steam engines and military vehicles all around the Showground. There will be lots of different displays of civilian and military post-war vehicles as the Dig for Victory Show is once again hosting the Western area rally of the Invicta Military-Vehicle Preseveration Society.Re-enactors and their exhibits will set the scene surrounding the arena with their Jeeps and camouflage.We will also create sets of what it would have looked like from the Home Front’s point of view!
We can’t wait for Heartfelt Vintage to take over the vintage tea room in the Victory Marquee with their delicious cakes. They’ve promised to bring a plethora of both sweet and savoury baked goods!The fantastic re-enactors Blitz buddies are always up to something, join them for a sing-a-long in the Victory marquee or see what they get up to on the outdoor stage.The Dig for Victory Show is a great excuse to dress up vintage style. We love it when visitors makes an effort, no matter the weather!Our popular Children’t trail takes the whole family all around the show!

Collect your ration book and an old penny from the “Guard Room” and learn how to check the oil and water on a jeep, handle plants in the allotment, join the knitting circle, decode a message, look through a periscope and lots of other things!We are so grateful to the RAF for supporting our event once again, on Sunday the C47 Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will fly over the Showground, so listen out and look up!If you love live music you are in luck, we’ve got two stages from where you can enjoy our performers. Visit the outdoor stage on the timeline and the main stage inside the Victory Marquee to catch some of our brilliant singers in action. We’ve got fantastic acts lined up; Luna Nightingale, Goodnight Sweethearts, Dixie Belles, Berkley Bluebirds, Dickie lines, John Prescott, Fifilaroux and the prohibition band and of course DJ UXB.We’ve got a great selection of local produce stalls, militaria, children’s books, vintage dresses as well as amazing catering outlets with delicious food. The nearest cash machine is in Nailsea so do bring cash with you to the show.In the Arena we’ve got Wartime Vehicles, Post War Parade, Skirmish and Artillery on the programme both Saturday and Sunday.In the Home Front Marquee there are some lovely inside stalls but you will also find make do and mend activities and cooking demonstrations. There will also be talks in the HF Marquee; learn about the Ship-to-Shore communications in WWII and the role Portishead Radio Station had during the war from Larry Bennet on Saturday. On Sunday Historian and Journalist Paul Beaver will join us at 1pm and in the afternoon Julia Elton will read from her grandmothers wartime diary.
We’ve got Swing dance classes for everyone as well as dance performances in the Victory Marquee that will make you smile!It looks like we might sell out of dance tickets for our spectacular Saturday Night Dance, get them whilst you can! The Big band, our fantastic singers Lucy Moon and Luna Nightingale and our glamorous compere, Lucky Uncle George are going to make it a night to remember. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes!

The Dig for Victory Show has community and good causes at its heart and this year we are running a charity raffle with a fantastic top cash prize of £250 as well as a bunch of other great prizes. When you buy a ticket to the show the proceeds from the ticket sales go directly to our chosen charities. This year we are supporting Help for Heroes, Children’s Hospice South West and Alzheimer’s Society.Now finally, keep an eye out for our brand new Dig for Victory Show Airship at the show! How to get that 1940s look!

Have you been practicing victory rolls all weekend like I have? The wonderful illustrator Lara Lockwood made this poster for the Dig for Victory Show programme a couple of years ago but it’s still a handy guide!

If you’ve tried but can’t make your rolls stay up, Poppy’s Hair Salon will be back at this years show!

The lovely Poppy’s ladies will pin your hair up 40s style, whether it is to go to the Victory Dance on the Saturday night or just to get into the Forties fun!

Poppy’s run on an appointment system both days – so make sure you book a spot as soon as you arrive, they are always very popular and book up quickly!

Don’t forget that you can buy tickets to the show online today! The Saturday Night Dance tickets are flying off the shelf so book now to avoid missing out!

Dig for Victory Show 2017 – The countdown has begun!

The countdown has begun,

It is now less than 5 weeks to go until we open the gates to the number one 1940s family festival in the South West. As always our aim is to bring history alive and the generations together for a weekend of learning, remembrance and fun!Our volunteers have been working tirelessly on some exciting new additions to the show as well as spreading the word about our fantastic event! Want to help? Tell all your friends and neighbours about the Dig for Victory Show!

The tickets for the Saturday night Victory Dance are selling fast so don’t forget to buy one whilst you still can! We can’t wait to welcome Bristol Community Big Band who are headlining on the night conducted by the fantastic Jonny Bruce with the gorgeous vocals of Lucy Moon. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes as their joy for swing is bound to keep you on the dance floor all night!

If you have never been to the show and would like to know more, keep reading!For our young visitors we have a fantastic Children’s trail which takes the entire family around all the different areas of the show. Try knitting in the Home Front Marquee, repotting by the allotment and are your hands steady enough to diffuse an unexploded bomb? We’ve got lots of delicious food stalls booked for this years show with the fabulous team from Heartfelt Vintage running our vintage tea room in the Victory Marquee.

Are you a fan of classic cars? There will be many shiny examples to see! Although we are a 1940s show we accept a wide range of vehicles! You can also find military vehicles, steam engines, tractors and all sorts around the place!When you feel like taking a break you can sit down and listen to one of hour history talks or demos, why not relax to some live music in the Victory Marquee or bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the view!

Re-enactors help to set the scene. Walking around the show you may feel like you have traveled back in time or that you might be at a film set!There will be lots of indoor and outdoor stalls selling everything from pies, books, antiques, handmade bags and dresses so don’t forget to bring some spending money! We do recommend bringing cash as the closest cash-machine is in Nailsea.We’ve got performers and live music playing all throughout the day with our Dj UXB keeping you on your toes in between! All this and more will be waiting for you in June. Please watch our highlights video from 2016 to get even more of a feel for the show!

Don’t forget that we’ve got weekend tickets on sale and that you can camp for the whole weekend in our camping field. If you are not so keen on bringing your own tent or camper van there is also our glamping option, book with The enchanted little bell tent through our website and you won’t have to worry about tent pegs and guy ropes!
