12 things to see and do at the Dig for Victory Show 2017

Can you believe that in just over a week the Dig for Victory Show will be back at the North Somerset Showground? We’ve had a record number of re-enactors and vehicle applications to the show this year as well as booking some absolutely fabulous entertainment!

From swing dance to skirmishes, live music to make do and mend, vintage cars to fairground rides, we’ve got something to entertain everyone.
Let’s have a look at some of the things that we’ve got lined up!

Keep an eye out for classic cars, bikes, steam engines and military vehicles all around the Showground. There will be lots of different displays of civilian and military post-war vehicles as the Dig for Victory Show is once again hosting the Western area rally of the Invicta Military-Vehicle Preseveration Society.Re-enactors and their exhibits will set the scene surrounding the arena with their Jeeps and camouflage. We will also create sets of what it would have looked like from the Home Front’s point of view!
We can’t wait for Heartfelt Vintage to take over the vintage tea room in the Victory Marquee with their delicious cakes. They’ve promised to bring a plethora of both sweet and savoury baked goods! The fantastic re-enactors Blitz buddies are always up to something, join them for a sing-a-long in the Victory marquee or see what they get up to on the outdoor stage. The Dig for Victory Show is a great excuse to dress up vintage style. We love it when visitors makes an effort, no matter the weather! Our popular Children’t trail takes the whole family all around the show!

Collect your ration book and an old penny from the “Guard Room” and learn how to check the oil and water on a jeep, handle plants in the allotment, join the knitting circle, decode a message, look through a periscope and lots of other things! We are so grateful to the RAF for supporting our event once again, on Sunday the C47 Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will fly over the Showground, so listen out and look up!If you love live music you are in luck, we’ve got two stages from where you can enjoy our performers. Visit the outdoor stage on the timeline and the main stage inside the Victory Marquee to catch some of our brilliant singers in action. We’ve got fantastic acts lined up; Luna Nightingale, Goodnight Sweethearts, Dixie Belles, Berkley Bluebirds, Dickie lines, John Prescott, Fifilaroux and the prohibition band and of course DJ UXB.We’ve got a great selection of local produce stalls, militaria, children’s books, vintage dresses as well as amazing catering outlets with delicious food. The nearest cash machine is in Nailsea so do bring cash with you to the show.In the Arena we’ve got Wartime Vehicles, Post War Parade, Skirmish and Artillery on the programme both Saturday and Sunday. In the Home Front Marquee there are some lovely inside stalls but you will also find make do and mend activities and cooking demonstrations. There will also be talks in the HF Marquee; learn about the Ship-to-Shore communications in WWII and the role Portishead Radio Station had during the war from Larry Bennet on Saturday. On Sunday Historian and Journalist Paul Beaver will join us at 1pm and in the afternoon Julia Elton will read from her grandmothers wartime diary.
We’ve got Swing dance classes for everyone as well as dance performances in the Victory Marquee that will make you smile! It looks like we might sell out of dance tickets for our spectacular Saturday Night Dance, get them whilst you can! The Big band, our fantastic singers Lucy Moon and Luna Nightingale and our glamorous compere, Lucky Uncle George are going to make it a night to remember. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes!

The Dig for Victory Show has community and good causes at its heart and this year we are running a charity raffle with a fantastic top cash prize of £250 as well as a bunch of other great prizes. How to get that 1940s look!

Happy Monday everyone,

Have you been practicing victory rolls all weekend like I have? The wonderful illustrator Lara Lockwood made this poster for the Dig for Victory Show programme a couple of years ago but it’s still a handy guide!
